Spring Chores

My little fruit trees have been in the ground for three years now.  The first spring, I didn’t know I was supposed to prune them.  Last spring, I tried my hardest to digest all the “rules” of pruning – three branches…a foot apart each…surround the tree…not too low to the ground… I couldn’t imagine how the tiny twigs and sprouting buds were going to turn into big trees that would fill my kitchen with fruit all summer long.  This year, I still don’t really understand the why and how of pruning, but I did discover that the hacked off branches make a beautiful arrangement in my kitchen.
